What I Do to Make at Least 1M+ TZS Monthly Online as a Solopreneur, Content Creator, and Digital Nomad in Tanzania

This article isn’t proof of your success. I’m not teaching you to be rich, just sharing my journey.

From Internet Cafes to Digital Nomad: My Journey

Growing up during the era of internet cafes, I developed a love for learning. By 2016, after finishing high school, I dreamed of pursuing aviation. However, financial constraints led me to stay with my uncle for a year, where my days began at 6 am, feeding and cleaning pig pens.

My interest in tech was sparked by watching shows like Fursa on Clouds Media Live, where hosts like Babbie Kabae interviewed tech visionaries such as Benji Fernandes and Isaya Yunge. Despite my curiosity, I needed money to explore this passion.

The Forex Journey

In 2017, I stumbled upon a Jamiiforum thread about forex trading by Sirjeff

Intrigued, I aspired to become an FX trader. Although I missed out on the TMT mentorship program, I found a mentor named Vincent, who charged me 120k TZS. Using my rent money, I started my trading career.

A few weeks later, I recovered my investment, but soon after, I fell ill with tuberculosis and had to return home to Mbeya for treatment.

Despite the setback, I returned to trading and made $800, the most money I’d seen at the time. This success motivated me to travel to Kenya in search of an aviation school, only to discover that the internet held more potential than aviation ever could.

Struggles in Nairobi

Living in Nairobi was challenging. I faced constant setbacks in forex trading and stayed in hostels before renting a place in Zimmerman. From 2019 to 2020, I dedicated myself to learning about tech and digital marketing, often sharing my knowledge on X. A pivotal moment was a tweet from Kennedy Mmari about starting a digital career through Google Digital Garage. Although I didn’t finish, it set me on a new path. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ubunifu College offered me a scholarship for web development, which I pursued using a borrowed computer.

The Grinding Years

Making money online as a solopreneur is tough. Over five years, I dabbled in various hustles—surveys, freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork, forex trading, transcriptions, microtasking, and even betting. Many ventures didn’t yield the results I hoped for, but I kept pushing forward, driven by my brother Nicky’s advice that it takes less time to become a professional in digital fields than in traditional careers.

Current Status and Aspirations

Am I satisfied? Not yet. Compared to other creators, I still travel by public transport and have dreams of owning a BMW, building a house for my mom, and acquiring high-end gadgets. I aspire to earn a six-figure income like top creators Matt Gray, Hey Eslo, Gadzhi Iman, and Dan Koe. Though the path is challenging, especially in Africa, even achieving 10% of that goal would be a success for me.

Traveling While Working

As a hodophile, I love traveling, particularly in Tanzania. Making money online allows me the freedom to work from anywhere, something an aviation career couldn’t offer.

Challenges and WhatsApp Marketing

I receive numerous DMs daily asking for guidance on starting an online career. It can be frustrating when people don’t utilize the content I share and expect me to do their work for them.

Despite my family’s initial skepticism about making money online, I’ve proven them wrong. Though I work harder than many 9-5 employees, the rewards, though modest, are satisfying.

In 2020, I began sharing content on WhatsApp, realizing its potential given the widespread use of smartphones in Tanzania. Building a network of 9,000 contacts and over 1,200 daily status views, my first significant income came in November 2021, earning $2,000 for writing a whitepaper. Today, I charge 50k TZS per ad post and can host physical events attended by hundreds, all promoted through WhatsApp.

Top-Selling Products and Services

  1. Consultations on Trendy Tech: Charging for consultations on AI, blockchain, and other technologies.
  2. FOREX/CRYPTO Agency: Facilitating transactions in TZS, cryptos, or dollars with a small profit margin.
  3. Selling Info Products: Writing and selling eBooks, tutorials, courses, and subscriptions through WhatsApp.
  4. Hosting Physical Events: Promoting events solely through WhatsApp.

Importance of Language and Skills

Fluency in English is crucial for online success, especially for anglophones. However, I’ve found success using Kiswahili, showing that you can cater to a local audience effectively. Specialization is essential, but diversifying skills is equally important. For instance, knowing crypto is beneficial, but creating engaging content requires knowledge of content creation, optimization, keywords, graphic design, and video editing.

Future Plans

My next goal is to expand my WhatsApp contacts to 100k in Tanzania. Unlike social media accounts, phone numbers are more reliable and harder to lose. To me, phone numbers represent the best client and customer data.
